Lesson 5A • Time indicators • Usually appear at or near the beginning of an ASL sentence • Specific time indicators • Last year, 6-months ago • General time indicators • A little while ago • In the past, will, shall • The sign WILL can include • The sign RECENT can include • Just, a short time ago

  3. Lesson 5B • The “exceptions to the rule” • WILL, LATE, FINISH generally appear in conjunction with the verbor at the end of the sentence • These are less specific than lesson 5A

  4. Things to remember • FINISH • Have seen = or FINISH SEE • Had eaten = EAT FINISH or FINISH EAT • Done sleeping = SLEEP FINISH or FINISH SLEEP • Already cooked = COOK FINISH or • Finished talking = CONVERSE FINISH or

  5. Things to remember • Some verbs indicate that an action happened in the past rather than emphasizing that the action is done. • Examples: • My son studied a lot! • MY SON STUDY MUCH, PAST (emphasis: ) • PAST, MY SON STUDY MUCH (emphasis: ) • I bought a car. • ME BUY CAR PAST

  7. Things to remember • The sign LONG-AGO can indicate • A while back, in the past, there was a time, back when, used to • Appears at the beginning of a sentence or narrative • The signs NEVER and ALWAYS usually appear at the end of an ASL sentence • My sister always eats pizza

  8. Things to remember • The sign LATER can appear wherever emphasis is needed • You must phone your teacher later. • LATER TELEPHONE YOURS TEACHER MUST YOU • Study now and watch the movie later. • The baby is asleep now. Later she will eat. • NOW BABY SLEEP EAT LATER WILL

  9. Things to remember • The sign RECENT is signed at the beginning of the sentence or just before the verb • Examples: • I just went to the dentist. • I just ate the sandwich • SANDWICH RECENT EAT ME FINISH

  10. Things to remember • Sometime time indicators are hidden in English sentences • Examples • My son went camping, once, and loved it. • PAST MY SON TENT HE LOVE • We used to eat meat, but not any more. • I’m gonna call you, I promise. • ME PHONE YOU WILL PROMISE
