  3. iTunes U • An extension to the iTunes music store • Opened in US in 2007 • Aim – to make academic content freely available to the public • Audio and Video content supported • Free of charge to the institution

  4. iTunes U in the UK • Became available in June 2008 • OU, TCD, UCL to start • October – Oxford and Cambridge • Warwick most recent • Look at Oxford…… • http://itunes.ox.ac.uk/

  5. iTunes U – the benefits to the OU • Over 4,167,869 downloads • 493,000 visitors downloaded files • 75,000 downloads/week • 87% of visitors from outside UK • 1 in 7 go to OU website • 163 albums containing 1,326 tracks (491 audio, 1014 video)

  6. iTunes U – benefits to Oxford • 560,000 downloads in four months • 2-3,000 per week on popular items • Stiglitz credit crunch series topped download charts for five weeks

  7. iTunes U at Sheffield…..? • Branding - Yes • Content – 250 items minimum – Not Yet…? • Recurrent commitment to record material…. • Recurrent commitment to quality control, uploading, metadata….. • Highest level Institutional backing? • Oxford have just advertised a post…

  8. iTunes U at Sheffield – next steps…? • What sort of content do we want? • Cathederal and the Bazaar • What have we got already? • Content audit • Filling the gap • Digitise existing material • Procure new content
