Coordinating Conjunction • It joins individual words, phrases, and independent clauses. It joins sentences part of equal grammatical status) • Forms: Six MOST COMMON coordinating conjunctionsFor, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet (FANBOY) (nor, for, and so only join INDEPENDENT CLAUSE) • Examples: 1. I ate the pizza and the pasta (words) 2. What is your hobby? Playing soccer or collecting stamps (phrases) 3. The wedding party is extravagant but the meal is awful (independent)
Sub coordinating Conjunction • It introduces a dependent clause and indicates the nature of the relationship among independent clause and dependent clause. It connects clauses of unequal status. • Forms: after, although, as, because, before, how, if, once, since, than, that, though, till, when, where, whatever, and while • Examples: 1. After the students finish their homework, they can leave the class. 2. Hady passed the test with flying color because he studied hard last night.
Correlative Conjunction • It appears in pair; links equivalent sentence elements • Forms: both…and, either…or, neither…nor…, not only… but also • Examples: 1. Both my sister and my brother are students 2. We can study either math or English 3. I not only lost his phone number, but also forgot where he lived
