Nicola A Spaldin, University of California-Santa Barbara, DMR 0649312 International Research Internships Broaden Undergraduate Experience of Science Eleven undergraduate students are spending their summer doing research at Fudan University (China), University of Chile, Technical University Eindhoven (Netherlands), Oxford University (England), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), University of Queensland (Australia) and the Tyndall Institute (Cork, Ireland). Nine international undergraduate students are currently in residence at UCSB. UCSB Chemistry major Shelley Esakoff working in Prof. Max Lu’s laboratory at the University of Queensland (Australia). A new REU site at the University of California Santa Barbara International Center for Materials Research (ICMR) and Materials Research Laboratory provides international research experiences for undergraduates at ICMR partner institutions around the world. Designed as an exchange program, the REU funds US undergraduates to spend 10 weeks overseas participating in mentored research projects, while their counterparts from ICMR partner institutes spend 10 weeks at UCSB. The internships provide the students with research and international experience at an early point in their scientific careers, helping to develop a scientific workforce with a global outlook.
