In this challenge, you will analyze Material Safety Data Sheets for three substances - Ethylene Dichloride, Hexanes, and Isopropyl Alcohol - to determine which was added to water to create flammable "Firewater." Exercise caution and use safety information to identify the substance and explain your reasoning. Consider the specific gravity and solubility of each substance to make accurate conclusions.

Firewater: MSDS Challenge • By now you’ve observed the demonstration of setting “water” on fire. You’ve probably guessed that there was something else besides water in the flask, even if you couldn’t see it. Your job is to figure out which of the following three substances was added: • Ethylene Dichloride • Hexanes • Isopropyl Alcohol • Use the Material Safety Data Sheets for each substance to find the information listed in the table (next slide). Then, figure out which substance was added to the water. Be sure to explain your answer. • Use the MSDS’s to decide which substance is most dangerous. Be sure to explain your answer.
Firewater: MSDS Challenge INFORMATION TABLE: NOTES: Water has a specific gravity of 1. So, if a liquid has a higher SG it will sink; if it has a lower SG, it will float. If a substance is soluble in water, it will dissolve in water.
