  3. How it’s formed… • For most verbs, the present subjunctive is formed by following these three steps: • 1. Start with the yo form of the present indicative.2. Then drop the -o ending.3. Finally, add the following endings: • -ar verbs:-e, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en • -er and -ir verbs:-a, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an

  5. Tarea: • Conjugar los siguientes verbos: • bailar • vivir • estudiar • beber • trabajar

  6. Cambios (irregulares) • -car: qu saque, saques, saquemos, etc. -gar: gu pague, pagues, paguemos, etc. -zar: c alcance, alcancemos, etc. • Yo form changes -ger/gir escoja, escojamos// dirija, dirijamos -cer/cir conozca, conozcamos//reduzca, reduzcamos -uir influya, influyas, influyamos -Go verbs tenga, tengas, tengamos, etc.

  7. Cambios (continuación) • Boot verbs -AR and ER verbs with boot changes still change as boot verbs. Me acueste, te acuestes, se acueste, etc. Pueda, puedas, pueda, podamos, podáis, puedan 4. -IR verbs e-i change in all the forms of the subjunctive; not boot verbs anymore (pedir, repetir) Pida, pidas, pida, pidamos, pidáis, pidan

  8. Cambios (continuación) NOTE: Some o-ue and e-ie change in ALL forms, but the nosotros/vosotros drop the letter “e” duerma, duermas, duerma, durmamos, durmáis sienta, sientas, sienta, sintamos, sintáis, sientan mienta, mientas, mienta, mintamos, etc.

Verbos totalmente irregulares Ser- sea, seas, sea, seamos, seáis, sean Ir- vaya, vayas, vaya, vayamos, vayáis, vayan Saber- sepa, sepas, sepa, sepamos, sepáis, sepan Dar- dé, des, dé, demos, deis, den Estar- esté, estés, esté, estemos, estéis, estén Haber- haya, hayas, haya, hayamos, hayáis, hayan

  10. Recomendaciones y deseos Verb of volition + que + subjunctive Una conversación típica entre madre e hijo: Mamá: I want you to clean your room!!! (Quiero que limpies tu cuarto) Juanito: No, I want my little brother to pick it up, he did it!!! (No, quiero que lo arregle mi hermano, él lo hizo) Mamá: I hope that you can be the responsible (mature) one here. (Espero que tu seas el responsable (y maduro) aquí.) Juanito: I hope that you can understand my perspective! (Espero que tu entiendas mi perspectiva) Mamá: Lord wills that you learn something and grow up (crecer)! (Ojalá que tu aprendas y crezcas ya)

  11. ¿Cómo se usa? • Estructura: Verb of volition + que + subjunctive verb ***there must be two different subjects Yo espero que tú estudies. Mis padres quieren que yo lave los platos.
