The Backstory • Competition Date is Saturday, February 9, 2013 • Location – Coppell Middle School North (CMSN) • Academic Olympics will be comprised of 9 different events • Final Competitive teams will be selected no later than Wednesday, November 14, 2012. • Registration will be online.
Academic Olympics Events • Current Events • Community Problem Solving • Instant Challenges • Legos • Oral Reading • Ready Writing • Creative Writing • Chess Puzzle • Storytelling • Film Race – Non Competitive event
Current Events • Grades 4 - 5 • 1 team comprised of 4 multi-aged members per school Learners will: • Be given a current event topic, along with access to laptops/desktops. • Utilize Google site to access and collaborate on the analysis document. • Complete the analysis document and turn it into the Google site. • Have a 3 hour time limit. • Create a 2 minute persuasive presentation of their choice
Community Problem Solving • Grades 2 – 5 • 1 team for 2nd/3rd Category (up to 6 multi-aged members) • 1 team for 4th/5th Category (up to 6 multi-aged members) Learners will: • Collaborate in teams of 6 learners, which must be multi-aged. • Identify a need within our local community, defined as the Coppell ISD area. • The community need identified cannot be in conjunction to a campus PBL or Service Learning project. • Create a plan to address the need and implement it. • Use technology to create a 2 minute presentation of team’s choice prior to the contest day about their projects’ results. Bring the presentation on a flash drive. • Present their presentation to the judges. • Be prepared for questions about their presentation/project.
Instant Challenges • Grades 2-3 • 1 team of 4 multi-aged members per school Learners will: • Collaborate in teams of 4 learners, which are multi-aged. • Use given supplies and materials to respond to a challenge. • Be able to respond to a challenge that is either task-based, performance based, or a combination of both. • Affectively present their challenge to the judges. • Presentation must be 2 minutes.
Legos • Grades 2-5 • 1 team for 2nd/3rd Category of 4 multi-aged members per school • 1 team for the 4th/5th Category of 4 multi-aged members per school Learners will: • Problem solve to create a structure of given dimensions using Lego bricks and wheels The Structure will either: • Resist an impact • Support weight • Travel a distance • A combination of the above
UIL Events Oral Reading • Grades 4-5 • Prose - 2012-2013 • 1 team per grade level consisting of 3 finalists and 1 alternate Ready Writing • Grades 3-5 • 1 team per grade level consisting of 3 finalists and 1 alternate Storytelling • Grades 2-3 • 1 team per grade level consisting of 3 finalists and 1 alternate
UIL Events Creative Writing • Grade 2 • 3 finalists and 1 alternate Chess Puzzle • Grades 2-3 • Grades 4-5 • Students will take a 30-minute objective test containing approximately 20 checkmate puzzles. Answer formats may include fill-in-the blank, multiple choice and/or true/false. • Individual or team participation choice
Film Race: Non-Competitive • Grades 4-5 • 1 two member team per school Learners, with KCBY mentors will: • Create a video to document the day. • Collaborate to capture the day’s events in a video format. • Edit the film footage captured throughout the day to share during the Awards Assembly at 4:00PM. • KCBY will supply all materials.
