MEANING OF WELL-BEING • Wall-being is a general term for the condition of an individual or group, for example their social, economic, psychological, spiritual or medical state. • High well-being means that, in some sense, the individual or group’s experience is positive, while low well-being is associated with negative happenings.
INFLUENCES OF WELL-BEING • Network of close friends • Enjoyable and fulfilling career • Enough money • Regular exercise • Sufficient sleep
CONCEPT OF WELL-BEING • Recently, psychologists have pointed out that the well being of an individual or group of individual have objective and subjective components. • The objective components are: -Standard of living -Level of living • The subjective component is “quality of life”
STANDARD OF LIVING • WHO defines standard of living as “income and occupation, standards of housing, sanitation and nutrition, the level of provision of health, educational, recreational and other service may all be used individually as measure of socio economic status, and collectively as an index of the standard of living.
LEVEL OF LIVING • The parallel team used standard of living used in United Nations document is “level of living”. • It consists of six components: • Health • Food consumption • Education • clothing • Occupation and working conditions • Housing
QUALITY OF LIFE • Quality of life is a composite measure of physical, mental and social wellbeing as perceived by each individual or a group of individuals. • Example: happiness, satisfaction and gratification as it is experienced in life concerns like health, marriage, family work, financial situation etc.
Continue..... People are now demanding a better quality of life. Therefore, governments all over the world are increasingly concerned about improving quality of life of their people by reducing mortality and morbidity, providing primary health care and enhancing physical, mental and social well being.
