  1. TERN Eco-informatics – Overview for DCRG Craig Walker Eco-informatics Facility Director

  2. Meeting Objectives • Revisit what Eco-informatics is doing and why • Equip Data Custodians with knowledge of ÆKOS • Demonstrate the (pre) Production Portal • Provide information on the SHaRED tool for Researcher Data Submission (NeCTAR) • Provide information on the Soils-to-Satellites web application (ANDS) • Facilitate your input/feedback • Identify potential/enhanced collaborations

  3. TERN Community • TERN Central Office • MSPN • Coasts • OzFlux • Eco-informatics • AusCover • Soils • eMAST • ACEAS Biodiversity & Physical Environment • SuperSites • Transects • LTERN • AusPlots -R • AusPlots - F Ecological Plot Data Physical Environment ACEAS – Australian Centre for Ecological Analysis & Synthesis AusPlots-F – AusPlots Forests AusPlots-R – Rangelands Coasts – Australian Coastal Ecosystems eMAST – Ecological Modelling & Scaling LTERN – Long TERM Ecosystem Research Network MSPN – Multi Scale Plot Netwoork Soils – Soil and Landscape Grid of Australia SuperSites –Australian SuperSites Network Data Analysis & Synthesis Data Cyberinfrastructure

  4. Eco-informatics Goals Revisited Bringing ecological data together for informed re-use Priorities for NCRIS: • Negotiate sharing and access for key national ecological databases (States and Commonwealth) • Consolidate ecological datasets from across Australia • Develop a national framework for describing and publishing ecological information (“standards”) • Encourage researcher uploading of data (SHaRED) • Build a “One-Stop-Shop” portal for ecological data These Goals are being addressed through the Australian Ecological Knowledge and Observation System – ÆKOS

  5. Eco-informatics Goals cont. Supplementary funding for projects: • Fully ingest, integrate and deliver TERN Ausplots data (EIF) • Support mobile field capture platforms and data (EIF) • Support the TERN Data Discovery Portal (EIF) • Incorporate MSPN datasets in ÆKOS (EIF) • Build SHaRED tool for Researcher Data Submission (NeCTAR) • Build Soils-to-Satellites web application (ANDS) • Extension of ontology, vocabularies (CRIS) • Bug fixes, incorporate feedback, support & maintenance (CRIS)

  6. ÆKOS Roadmap • Beta Portal • Further data ingested • Additional licenses • Ausplots • Datasets ingested for SA, WA, QLD • Data licenses signed for SA, QLD • ÆKOS Portal Release 1.0 complete • Open-source code & documentation • Contingency arrangements • Alpha Portal 2011 2012 2013 2014 2013 • Complete SHaRED • Complete Soils-2-Satellites • Start CRIS funding for AEKOS • Complete CRIS • Complete MSPN data ingestion • Start SHaRED • Start Soils-2-Satellites • Start MSPN data ingestion • Start Data Transfer Tool Partners in Delivery

  7. Environmental Information Landscape for Australia

  8. Collaborations

  9. The ÆKOS system Soils-to-Satellites ALA • Data sourced from Govt environmental databases – observations + context • TERN-By or CC-By licences • Storage is via a no-SQL flexible “Graph Store” • Information framework using an ontological model and controlled vocabularies • Deliver via a Data Portal – at present Beta 1.2 • Services publish to ALA for S2S • QA/QC through DSL Model (next slide) • RIF-CS feed to TDDP and ANDS • Once SHaRED is online then more datasets so potential for feeds to DataONE etc Access Control Data Portal Web Services RIF-CS ANDS, TDDP ÆKOS Data Repository Information Framework Licensing Framework End-user Community Facilitated Ingest SHaRED Tool Researcher Submitted Data Agency Datasets TERN MSPN Data Govt Ecological Surveys Fauna Flora

  10. The Future Potential • Extension of thematic coverage to include vertebrate and invertebrate fauna, fire monitoring, aquatic ecosystems • More data ingested to strengthen the focal point of the portal, given that ÆKOS is generic and supports all ecological data • Improvements to visualisation and analysis based on feedback from the ecological community • ÆKOS is a suitable repository for the vast volumes of hardcopy material including an effective means of dealing with “filing cabinet leftovers” from existing databases • National method catalogue for ecological data collection • Strong partnerships developed with custodians can be extended to support capacity building within Agencies, and can optimise legacy and future investments

  11. Standing items for DCRG agenda Data sensitivities and utilisation of ALA services by Eco-informatics and vice versa. Taxonomic handling – multiple State taxonomies Data governance model for annotations/Permanent Identifier for Data
