Background Continued • First in her family born into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. • Parents and elder siblings were slaves on Madison Parish Plantation owned by Robert W. Burney.
Inspiration for Madam • Had a scalp problem that cause hair lose. • Experimented with a variety of home remedies and products made by Annie Malone. • Became a sales agent for Malone and moved to Denver where she married Charles Joseph Walker.
From Sarah to Madam • Founded her own business and began selling her own product called Madam Walker’s Wonderful Hair Gower, “A scalp conditioning and healing formula.” • In 1908 she opened a college in Pittsburgh to train her “hair Culturists.”
From Sarah to Madam cont.… • Aggressive Marketing styles and relentless ambition led her to be labeled as the first know African- American woman to become a self-made millionaire.
Did You Know? • Walker did not invent the Pressing comb another African American woman “Annie Turnbo Pope Malone” did. • In 1905 Walker worked as a sales agent for Malone where she was inspired by Malone’s inventions and built an empire of her own.
