Mapping Experiment Part II – The Inequality Problem Steps: • Form 3 teams, get paper, post-its, and tape (optional) • Look at the list of suggested causes of the inequality problem. • Choose the 5-6 most important ones. Put them on the maps and draw causal arrows. • Then add one item at a time, and link it in, until you have a map of many of the key factors.
Mapping Experiment Part II – The Inequality Problem Things to remember: Don’t draw Instead draw: This shows feedback.
Mapping Experiment Part II – The Inequality Problem Things to remember: Solid lines show positive (reinforcing) feedback – This often leads to conflict escalation.
For example: Positive feedback. Poor education Poverty
Mapping Experiment Part II – The Inequality Problem Things to remember: Dotted lines show negative (limiting) feedback – . This often leads to conflict de-escalation.
For example: Good schools reduce poverty, as poverty is reduced, there is more money to pay for good schools. Negative feedback. Good schools Poverty
Try it: Elements to consider: • Problems at the Top • AssortativeMating (Rich mate with rich) • The Super Star Effect (luck, smarts) • Money Addiction/Boundless Greed • Others? • Problems the Bottom • Single Parenting • Criminal Behavior • Unemployment/Under Employment • Low Educational Aspirations • Scarcity-Afflicted Thinking • Others? • Systemic Problems • Automation • Reserve Army of the Unemployed • Zero-Sum Mentality (You win, I lose) • Matthew’s Law (He who has, gets more) • Stress Limits Compassion • Under-Performing Schools • Lance Armstrong Effect (Cheating) • Prison Industrial Complex • Others
This week’s topic: COMPLEXITY! All Big Problems Are Complex Problems

Characteristics of Complex Systems • Multitudes of independent actors each seeking to advance their own self-interest based on their image of their environment and their problem-solving algorithm • Such systems are evolve and are not designed • There are no control points
