A Day To Remember A one off short
Synopsis • A day to relax and enjoy life ends in disaster for one rider who didn’t think about his actions. Emphasising the importance to use common sense and independent thinking to make your own judgements.
Scene • The drama is set in a hospital room. Beeps from heart monitors, footsteps, mumbled voices, and the sound of the occasional bird chirping from outside the window can all be heard in the background while our main character Alex, describes the events that unfortunately led to this moment.
Character profile (MAIN) • Name: Alex Frederickson • Age: 20 • Ethnicity: White British • Occupation: Works as a cashier at local supermarket to fund Uni education. • Connections: Very few friends, Alex’s only real company is his best mate and Uni friend James. • Conflicts: Alex is always very self-aware and safety conscious, although often succumbs to pier pressure. Against his better judgement he loves adrenaline sports and pushing things to the limit. • Motivation: Constantly wants to push himself to break boundaries and earn enough money to live the happy life his parents never had. • Family background: Parents and all other known relatives died before 18th birthday.
Character profile (SECONDARY) • Name: James Michaels • Age: 20 • Ethnicity: White British • Occupation: Uni student, he has no job and lives off parents money. • Connections: Always the popular one, he had many friends and constantly goes out to have fun. • Conflicts: He lives free for the moment, never bats an eyelid to doing dangerous things and rarely says no to anything. • Motivation: He has very little motivation for anything in life, his work suffers as a result and he is close to dropping out of Uni. • Family background: Both his parents are successful at their jobs and are highly paid. They live a care free life and enjoy the finer things as much as they can while they can.
Beginning Explains situation • We hear a heartbeat monitor fade in and the distant sound of voices mumbling in the background. A short while after we first hear these sounds (so we know where the character is and there general situation) Alex speaks in his head (to audience), very calmly and softly he start to talk about his immediate state. He explain he has no sense of time or place, that he can’t move talk or open his eyes, only listen to his surroundings. After this Alex pauses for a moment during which we hear the heart rate monitor again more prominently as well as the background mumbling voices.
Middle Recalling setting off • This short break in narration lasts for no more than 5 seconds. Alex then starts to recall the events that led to his being in the hospital in past tense. As he explains the earlier events we start to hear sounds from the event as if we are witnessing a detailed flashback. Alex then calmly talks about starting up his bike. We hear an engine starting up behind his voice. Alex then talks about setting off to get petrol but getting held up briefly in temporary traffic lights. The story then jumps forward and Alex continues after paying and setting off again. He then recalls pulling over next to his friend who was already waiting, at this point we hear the friend briefly speak and tell Alex to keep up.
End Recalling the crash • Again after a small jump forward in time Alex recalls racing along behind his friend on a back road. Alex describes his friend mucking about on the back road puling wheelies and honking his horn in celebration. At this time there are no other cars on the road. They both turn down another back road and find themselves behind a large van. Not wanting to be held up by a van Alex’s friend violently swerves out and overtakes without looking ahead. Getting just past the van he looks back at Alex and signals him to catch up. Unknown to Alex the van is slowing down for a junction and a car has started to pull out across the road. Alex reluctantly follows his friend and starts to overtake. Just as he is past the van he notices the car coming across the road, and applies the brakes. But he has no time to stop.
Why? • I decided to do this because while it’s certainly not going to be an engaging recurring thing, as a one off informative or reminding production I think it will reiterate the importance of thinking independently and should bring home how irresponsible and potentially costly it can be not to.
Target audience • The target audience of this radio drama will primarily be late teens to young adults since it’s that sort of age range being represented within the drama. -Hard working individuals that just want a break on the weekends -College Students -Uni Students -Young adults in low paid work -Motorbike enthusiasts -Daredevils -Adrenaline junkies • The audience will be expected to have some experience of the thinking behind the production. Anyone will most likely have prior knowledge of the ideas but targeting this specific age range seems like a sensible thing to do as this range is potentially the most vulnerable and could benefit more from the message hopefully conveyed.
Budget • £20,000 for a 60 minute production.£20,000 / 60 = £333r x 4 = £1333 • Budget for a 4 minute production is approximately £1333. • Script writer = £0.00Studio hire per hour = Approx. £100.00Voice Actor 1 = Approx. £50.00Voice Actor 2 = Approx. £50.00Sound effects x 50? = Approx. £100.00 • Total = £300.00 • Leaving over £1000.00 for additional expenses if necessary.
