Calculations • How many time does your heart beat per minute? day? Week? Month? Year? • Your heart pumps ~5.3 quarts per minute. How many quarts are pumped in a day? Week? Month? Year? • How many times has your heart beaten since you were born?
The Heart • Your heart is about the same size as your fist. • An average adult body contains about five quarts of blood. • All the blood vessels in the body joined end to end would stretch 62,000 miles or two and a half times around the earth. • The heart circulates the body's blood supply about 1,000 times each day. • The heart pumps the equivalent of 5,000 to 6,000 quarts of blood each day. • In one day, the blood travels a total of 19,000 km (12,000 miles) - that's four times the distance across the US from coast to coast.
Cardiovascular System • Includes: heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries • Function: delivers oxygen and nutrients to interstitial fluids and all of the bodies cells and carries waste to organs where it can be excreted
Circulation • Circulation: movement in a regular circular fashion • Systemic: pertaining to or affecting the body as a whole • Systemic circulation: the heart pumps blood through a network of vessels that complete the circuit by taking blood to all parts of the body and returns it to the heart
Cardiovascular Terms • Vascular: pertaining to a vessel • Excretion: the normal process that the body uses to get rid of waste • Arteries: carry oxygen-rich blood to body tissues • Veins: carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart
Pulmonary System • Pulmon(o) = lung • Pulmonary: pertaining to the lungs • Pulmonary circulation: includes lungs, pulmonary artery, venules, arterioles, and pulmonary veins • Provides oxygen to the blood
Systemic System • Systemic circulation is the way oxygen-rich blood gets taken to the body • Includes arteries, aorta, vena cava, veins and systemic capillaries
Systemic system • Carries blood between the heart and the rest of the body
Pulmonary system • Carries blood between the heart and the lungs to pick up oxygen
Arteries • Arteries: take blood away from the heart • Arteri(o) = artery • -ole = little • Arteriole: small artery • Capillaris = hair-like • Capillaries: tiny arteries that are so small that erythrocytes must pass through single file
Veins • Veins: carry blood back to the heart Phleb(o), ven(i), ven(o), vas(o) and angi(o) = vein • Venipuncture and phlebotomy = opening of a vein to draw blood • Phlebotomist: specialist in drawing blood
Veins • Venules join capillaries to veins • Venul(o) = venule • Venular: pertaining to venules • Angiocarditis: inflammation of the heart vessels • Angiospasm: twitching of a blood vessel • Angioplasty: surgical repair of a blood vessel
