  1. Yard Layout Planning

  2. Yard Planning • What kind of yard? • Requirement from user departments. • Feasibility Survey • Technical aspects and operational requirement • Detailed survey taking in to account SOD & other safety provisions. • Preparation of ESP • Consider execution methodology, • Ease of construction, and • Maintainability.

  3. Functional Classification of Station Yards • Halt/Flag station • Wayside/Crossing station/or passing station • Junctions • Passenger/Goods Terminal

  4. Halt Station • Stopping place of Simplest Kind • Usually have a Rail Level platform & Name Boards at either end. • A small waiting shed is also provided to serve as booking office. • No yard or station Building/staff. • Few trains stops briefly • To enable passengers to entrain and detrain • Booking is done by TTE or Travelling booking clerks

  5. Halt Station

  6. Flag Station • A more important station than Halt station • It has station building and staff. • On controlled section • Has Morse Telegraph; or • Control Phone connected to one of the stations for communication. • Small Waiting Hall and booking office • Platform with benches • Drinking water arrangement

  7. Flag Station

  8. Way Side/Crossing Station • To divide route into block sections; and • To allow crossing trains in opposing direction in case of single line sections. • Usually with 2/3 line in single line sections; and • 4/5 line in double line sections. • Facilities on busy sections (Single/Double line) • Arrangement for simultaneous reception of trains; & • Sufficient no. of platforms for passenger trains

  9. Way Side/Crossing Station (SL)

  10. Way Side/Crossing Station (DL-3L)

  11. Way Side/Crossing Station (DL-4L)

  12. Junction Stations • Receives/dispatches trains in more than two directions. • Minimum 3 faces of platform; and • Facility of simultaneous reception of trains is considered essential. • Usual requirement at junction stations • Stabling of ART & ARMV (with entry/exit in all directions) • Siding for sick wagons and saloon etc. • shunting neck • Etc.

  13. Junction Station

  14. Junction Station

  15. Junction Station

  16. Terminal Stations • Station at the end of a railway line. • Trains arriving there have to end their journeys. • In a few cases, the railway line might continues for a short distance beyond the station • For terminating trains to proceed to sidings; or • For engine reversal

  17. Terminal Stations

  18. Terminal Stations

  19. Terminal Stations

  20. Other Yards • Goods Yard & Parcel Yard • Transhipment Yard • Container Yard/Depot • Marshalling yard (Flag type & Hump type) • Service Yards • Loco sheds • Loco yards • Washing lines • Stabling lines • etc.

  21. Goods Stations • Usually equipped with • A large number of stabling; and • Loading sidings with or without goods platforms. • A container terminal for trans-shipment. • Maritime container terminal. • Inland container terminal. (ICT/ICD)

  22. Station Yards - Expanse • On Single Line • 50 m beyond SRJ of outermost points at either end • On Double Line (with 2 aspect signaling) • From Home signal to a distance of 50 m beyond SRJ of outermost point at trailing end; or • If no loops • ..to Last stop signal of each line.

  23. Station Yards - Expanse • On Double Line (with MACLS) • Upto a distance of 50 m beyond SRJ of outermost points at either end of station • If no loops • from BSLB to Last Stop Signal of each Line. • These provisions also applies to Flag station and Halt stations in case of New Line projects (CS-17)

  24. Feasibility Survey • For New Yard • For Existing Yard

  25. New yard • Decision on • Proposed center line of station building depending on geographical, technical, social and political features. • Survey of area on either side of proposed center line of station building • Consider SOD and other safety requirements • Plot a draft sketch/ESP indicating all features

  26. Remodelling of existing yard • Why? • Increase in No. of lines for increase in traffic • To remove existing deficiencies & shortcomings • To connect a new line to an existing Line • To change turnouts (longer turnout for higher speed) • To change signalling system • For electrification.

  27. Remodelling of existing yard • Remodelling • A Co-ordinated work • Involves Civil, Traffic, S&T, Electrical department etc. • Operations/safety affected during execution

  28. Existing yard • Foot by Foot survey from C/L of station building. • Verify all existing details at site, with yard plan • Existing track centres • Stock joints & TOs • Platforms • OHE masts • Signal locations • Cabins • Culverts locations & barrel length • Grades • Beginnings & end of transition • Etc.

  29. Existing yard contd.. • Mark deviations, if any on the plan. • Mark any feature not recorded in the drawing. • Propose remodelling on existing plan (Drawing office) • Try retaining existing work, as far as possible • Go for ideal layout for any change. • Site verification of proposal • Whether planned layout is feasible?

  30. Existing yard contd.. • Prepare final plan & obtain approval • First from Division; then • From HQ. • CSTE, PCE & COM to jointly sign on the drawing • Other officers may also require to sign depending upon the nature of work. • Final drawing will be the ESP for yard

  31. Provisions of SOD : Schedule I Chapter II(Station yard) • Minimum distance between Centre to centre of straight track :- • For existing works 4,265 mm • For new works / Alt. 5,300 mm Note: • Consider extra clearances on curves. • OHE mast and Signal post shall not preferably be provided in between tracks. • However, under unavoidable circumstances, the clearances mentioned in Para (ii) above shall be increased by equal to the width of such provisions/structures/foundation, as the case may be.

  32. Provisions of SOD… • Max. gradient in Station yards: • For existing works 1 in 400 (0.25%) • For new works / Alt. Recommended 1 in 1200 (0.083%) Maximum/steepest 1 in 400 (0.25 %) Note: There must be no change of grades within 30 meters of any points & crossings.

  33. Provisions of SOD… • No station yard shall be constructed nor shall any siding join a passenger line on a steeper grade than 1 in 260, except where unavoidable. • If provided, then; • only with previous sanction of Railway Board • Obtained through CRS; and • A slip siding or other arrangement is made sufficient to prevent accident

  34. Condonation for Gradient Steeper than 1 in 1200

  35. Other provisions in SOD • There must be no change of grades within 30 m of any points or crossings. • Horizontal distance from centre of track to face of passenger platform coping. • Note : The coping of passenger platform must be so constructed that when necessary, to allow for introduction of wider stock, it can be easily and expeditiously set back to 1905 mm from centre of track.

  36. Other provisions in SOD • a. Horizontal distance from centre of track to face of goods platform coping, • b. Horizontal distance from centre of track to face of any platform wall,

  37. Other provisions in SOD • Height above rail level for high passenger platforms:- • Maximum height above rail level for medium level passenger platform; • Maximum height above rail level for goods platforms;

  38. Other provisions in SOD • (a) Minimum horizontal distance of any building on a passenger platform from centre line of track; (b)Minimum horizontal distance of any building or longitudinal boundary fence from the centre line of track of passenger platform which is not on island platform (for new works or alterations to existing works);

  39. Other provisions in SOD • Minimum horizontal distance from centre line of track to a pillar, column, lamp or similar isolated structure on a passenger platform or any building on a goods platform; • Height of Over Head Structures. • Platform in curve – Minimum Radius 875m • Length of passenger platform – length of longest passenger train (excl. engine, booked to stop at the platform) • Etc.

  40. Provisions of SOD (chapter-II-Station Yards) Length of Siding • Minimum clear available length (CAL/CSL) of one siding at any station where it is intended to cross trains: • Shall be length of the longest train permitted in the section plus 35m. • Although it may not be necessary till traffic develops to provide sidings for the largest possible train loads, land should be acquired for them and no building, level crossings or other obstructions should be permitted that will interfere with the siding being lengthened to the following dimensions:

  41. Provisions of SOD (chapter-II-Station Yards)

  42. Provisions of SOD (chapter-II-Station Yards) Length of Siding Clear available length (CAL/CSL) denote: • Distance between foot of the signal to Fouling Mark in the rear on the same line in case of Main line and Directional loop at Station yard. • In case of Common Loop at the stations, Clear Available Length/ Clear Standing Length shall be the distance between two starter signals of opposite direction on the same line.

  43. Safety provisions • ISOLATION • As per General Rules • All passenger lines must be separated from other lines.

  44. Safety provisions - Sand Hump

  45. Safety provisions –Snag Dead End

  46. Trap/Derailer/Derailing Switch

  47. Isolation … contd.. • Snag dead end length beyond the starters • 120 m for MAUQ, as driver gets more aspects • 180 m for LQ • Sand hump/snag dead end could be disastrous in cae of overshooting • If the end of sand humps area inhabitated • Never locate a derailing switches on cross over (i.e. On turnout or turn in curve).
