The CyGrid Initiative • Established in 2002 in the University of Cyprus • Main goals: • To establish a Cypriot presence in international Grid infrastructures. • To develop local know-how and expertise on the development and operation of Grid technologies. • To promote the uptake of Grid technologies in Cyprus, the interconnection of existing and future resources, and the deployment of new applications. • To support research in Grid and Global Computing. • Funding from: • EU-IST (APART, CrossGrid, CoreGRID, EGEE, EGEE-II, g-Eclipse) • Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus (eScience-CY) • University of Cyprus

CyGrid Certification Authority • Top level certification authority for Grids in Cyprus: • certified by EUgridPMA, the European Grid Policy Management Authority • member of EUgridPMA since its inception in 2003 • mutually recognized by grid CAs of European countries, the USA, and the Russian Federation • Provides X.509 certificates for authentication and authorization purposes for grid users, grid machines/nodes, and grid services. • Managing authority for Registration Authorities operating at CyGrid Resource Centre • Total certificates issued so far: 80 • Website: http://cygrid.org.cy/CyGridCA
Application Deployment • Local Applications: • Quantum Chromo-Dynamics - measuring the properties of gluons -- Done (2004). New effort for a different QCD application about to start. • CompChem (gamess) application for molecular dynamics -- Porting Stage. • Computer Architecture - SimpleScalar Simulator is a tool-set primarily used for hardware-software co-verification, and for building detailed micro-architectural modeling -- Ported, testing phase. • Computer Graphics - Distributed rendering -- Windows(R) application running on Linux using the WINE compatibility layer. Opens the door for Windows-based applications -- In progress • Consulting application developers on how to port their applications. • Data challenges: • Participation in the WISDOM biomed data challenge in 2005 • Participation in the on-going experiment for drug discovery for the H5N1 virus. (committed additional resources: ~40 extra CPU's onto the existing 30% of time allocation for the BIOMED VO)
