The Paper Pulverizer By Zack Hayden, Caleb Anthony, Justin Maney
The Project • Our project goal was to design a Rube-Goldberg device that would stamp a piece of paper • We used parts from around the house, as well as recycled materials and store-bought objects • Total cost of the device was under $15.00
The Sequence • 1. A marble is rolled down a series of ramps, and strikes a second marble resting at the end • 2. Marble rolls down a track and through a pipe, where it activates a mouse trap • 3. Attached to the mouse trap is a spoon, which launches a pebble into a soda bottle • 4. The pebble falls through the mouth of the bottle and strikes another marble, which rolls down a ramp and activates a rat trap • 5. Attached to the trap is a mallet with a stamp, which swings 180° and strikes the sheet of paper
The Energy Conversions • Step 1:Gravitational Potential to Kinetic Energy • Step 2:Gravitational Potential to Kinetic Energy • Step 3:Spring Potential to Kinetic Energy • Step 4:Gravitational Energy to Gravitational Potential Energy • Step 5:Gravitational Kinetic to Spring Potential Energy
The Conclusion • The construction of the project was tedious and time consuming, and took lots of testing due to the amount of moving parts. • The only problems experienced were the trajectory of the mouse trap and getting everything to fall in place. • The project was fun and successful!
