The Prompt • Few trainees knew PDSA, QI terminology, QI methodology • Trainees unsure of availability of an online tracking systemfor QI projects • Few trainees described projects using QI methodology • Faculty and trainees recommended: • More education on basic QI principles and methodology • Formal Lean training • More trainee involvement on QI committees and in departmentalQI retreats

Educational Initiative • Collaboration between OPI Process Improvement & Quality Education and Department of Clinical Education • Completed an assessment of current approach: • Needs of institution/ Needs of learners • Review of QIAB database showed >1600 projects registered since 2014. Only 23 projects involved trainees. • No formal program available the meet the needs • Developed the Clinical Quality Improvement Certificate

Eligibility •  Part of the MD Anderson workforce • Interested in learning and applying quality improvement knowledge and skills to the workplace to improve the delivery of care to our patients • Faculty members, fellows, residents, students, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who work in the clinical setting *Nonclinical personnel may choose to participate in the Fundamentals for Quality Improvement provided by OPI Quality College

  9. Curriculum Overview • The clinician will gain fundamental knowledge of QI tools and methodology through online courses and experiential learning activities • Checklist with 6 Tasks • Accompanying Program Guide • UT MD Anderson Certificate endorsed by President, CQO and DIO

Timeframe • Meets the time constraints of busy practicing healthcare professionals • Activities are completed online or on campus, integrated into daily workflows, and meld with professional responsibilities • May be completed in as little as 3 months or as long as 4 years depending on the time constraints, effort applied, and complexity of the QI project
