Eric’s Strengths & Weaknesses Based on Initial Assessment • STRENGTHS • Visual cues • Some monitoring • Fluent until mistake • Can VS beginning sounds • Some cross-checking • Enthusiasm • WEAKNESSES • Doesn’t use MS cues often • Little R->SC, usually only SC word • Very little R->C • No VS to ME

What Eric Has Learned From Me • X while reading • VS BME: letter/word work and “chunking” examples • When to use upper and lowercase letters. • Making more effort towards asking “Does this make sense?” • R->C as building sentences • IT’S OKAY R->SC and C! • Comprehension- applying higher level thinking to create, preview/predict/confirm, and journal. • When to use “new” CAP: quotation marks and commas.

What I Have Learned From Eric & EDU 360 • What makes sense to me does not mean it makes sense to the student • Teaching a strategy one time will not work • Must teach in several ways • Reading & writing are complex & take time to grasp • Importance of choosing & introducing books • Don’t underestimate a student’s ability to try & ultimately succeed

  11. A Final Piece of Advice From Eric You have to remember that reading and writing is suppose to be enjoyable not a struggle.
