Case Study of Eric Jessica Fisher EDU 360-40 Individualizing & Assessing Reading Summer 2013
A Little About Eric • Bright 1st grader • Loves reading, animals, and sports • Favorite book: Goosebumps series • Likes to read at home with Mom
Initial Assessment • Confusions: I & l s & c • Unsure about: comma & “ ” • Missed 6 sight words • 23 written words • Unknown: d, e, u, & ing • Reading Level • Independent @ level C • Instructional @ level D • Frustrational @ level E
Eric’s Strengths & Weaknesses Based on Initial Assessment • STRENGTHS • Visual cues • Some monitoring • Fluent until mistake • Can VS beginning sounds • Some cross-checking • Enthusiasm • WEAKNESSES • Doesn’t use MS cues often • Little R->SC, usually only SC word • Very little R->C • No VS to ME
My Teachings & Eric’s Responses My Teachings Eric’s Responses Was able to find chunks Some trouble keeping ing & sh together Eventually applied chunking to text reading Was able to PPC over Birthday Party Agreed it sounded odd R-> C after fixing mistake • Chunk words :VS BME • Covering unfamiliar words: VS BME • Preview-Predict-Confirm • Asking “Does this make sense?” to get M and R->C
What Eric Has Learned From Me • X while reading • VS BME: letter/word work and “chunking” examples • When to use upper and lowercase letters. • Making more effort towards asking “Does this make sense?” • R->C as building sentences • IT’S OKAY R->SC and C! • Comprehension- applying higher level thinking to create, preview/predict/confirm, and journal. • When to use “new” CAP: quotation marks and commas.
Some of Eric’s Work With VS VS during Word Work visits = v-is-its VS during Text Reading Strong = st-st-strock Strong = str=on-g
Final Assessment • 100 % of letters • Unsure about “ ” but knew what they look like • 2 tests: knew 97 words • Wrote 29 words • Unknown sounds: u, u, ing • Text Reading Levels: • Independent @ level D • Instructional @ level F • Frustrational @ level G
What I Have Learned From Eric & EDU 360 • What makes sense to me does not mean it makes sense to the student • Teaching a strategy one time will not work • Must teach in several ways • Reading & writing are complex & take time to grasp • Importance of choosing & introducing books • Don’t underestimate a student’s ability to try & ultimately succeed
A Final Piece of Advice From Eric You have to remember that reading and writing is suppose to be enjoyable not a struggle.
