  1. Case Study Of Apartheid William. Chuang

  2. Background Information Years ago the Boers left the homeland because of Religious reasons which they Boers had believe in but their government don’t. So they set sail to their own land. The first white settlers were the Boers. They they took away the best farmlands from the tribes people who already lived there. The blacks who had lost it were forced to work for Boer. Others were chased away or shot on hunting expeditions. In 1707, the Boers had stop immigration to South Africa for over 100 years. However this event ended when the English captured the cape. During 1814 the English bought the cape from the Dutch and it became part of the British empire. Conflict started when the British moved in, the Boers did not like to be ruled by the English. For example the idea of “ Having black police forces” To Boers all blacks are inferior. Things got worse once the English banned slavery in its empire in1833. The Boers were communist and disagreed to the fact that black and whites are equal. Once again the Boers had set of to become independent. From 1835 thousands of Boers traveled north-east, this Journey led to dangerous battles with the Zulu kingdom (The strongest tribe of all blacks). Several Boers had settled in the Zulu kingdom. But AGAIN the English made the Zulu land their British colony. So again the Boers set off.

  3. Background Information Part 2 As the Boers continues their journey, they crossed the Orange River and organized 2 new states for themselves. The Orange free state and Transvaal. The lands the black tribes consider theirs. Peace among the Boers did not last for long, in 1866 diamonds were discovered in the Vaal River. Numerous prospectors showed up trying to get their hands on gold and diamonds to made their fortune. At the same time, more black people came looking for work. A new system was made for whites to control the blacks easier. If a black wanted to go in town each of them would require a pass from whites. In 1871. The English took over the diamond ground, and in 1877 they took over Transvaal too. The Boers have no trust of British at all. Foreigners outnumbered the Boers when more gold was discovered in Johannesburg. No longer will the Boers flee, they were concern about loosing control of their republic. Now they would strike back against the British Empire. In 1899 war between Boers and British stared. After 3 years the British had won, but numerous Boer Children and Women were killed in concentration camps. British now has full control of “Orange Free State” and “Transvaal” In result The British paid the Boers 3 million euros and promised, one day they’ll eventually have the power to govern themselves without the British. They Boers were happy with the outcome, in 1909 the Boers had control over Transvaal and The Orange Free State. By now they would run things their own way.

  4. And Minority Group Majority Group • The Whites are the majority group in Apartheid (South Africa). They had the power to control over the blacks. They were the ones being prejudice and discriminate against the blacks. Whites represents the Boers, and blacks represents Native South Afrikaners. • Native South Afrikaners were the Minority groups during Apartheid. In South Africa it was the blacks that are being assaulted and effected by prejudice and discrimination. • Even though the blacks out numbered the whites, the whites were more advanced in technology than the blacks. The blacks couldn’t win over their land with just close combat weapons, while the whites had guns.

  5. Economics Effect--- Bantu Education • In 1953 Dr. Verwoerd the prime minister decided that Afrikaners can only be taught in their own language, and would follow a different education from the whites. Whites would have higher education standard than blacks. In addition they would learn that blacks are not equal to whites, and learn to be a better workers for the whites. • Dr. Verwoerd Idea: Teaching the Africans English would just make them think they are equal to whites. There is no place for the Native in the Boer community, above certain form of labor. “ What is the use of teaching a Bantu math when it cannot use it in practice?” he questioned. “ This is ABSURD” • Black teachers were under paid. A white teacher would earn 603 pounds per year, and a black teacher would only learn half the whites earning. • Many jobs were kept for whites, blacks were paid far less. There was a lot of migrant labor.

  6. Social Effects • South Africans were separated into 4 main groups they were not allow to socialize together, be educated together or inter marriage. • People were separated into very defined areas for housing. • People were told where to live. Base on their skin color. • Pass Laws were invented to helpthe whites know the coordination of blacks. • Black people couldn’t own land and couldn’t vote. • Families were split up. • Tribal society were broken up.

  7. Psychological problems • Africans lost their land and a lot of their culture and it impacted them negatively. They had lost power to have controlled over their own lives. • “Black Consciousness” Native Africans thinks there not good enough to be equal to the whites. Several blacks were taught many times in school, and were told by whites, enough times to influence the whole Native South Afrikaners to believe they are inferior. But really everyone’s equal.

  8. Physical • Soweto: Student riot against education, had lead to many injuredand deaths of students. • Injury and death from mass demonstration. • Many Africans were to hard work, like working in factories, and mining. • Blacks were tortured, shot with rubber bullets, or beaten with batons during riots. • Whites way of clearing of breaking up, demonstration, boycotts, or riots, are to use weapons against the blacks.

  9. Causes of Prejudice and Discrimination • Another causes of prejudice and discrimination are, in the surrounding you grew up in. In our life time parents may tell us stories of other groups of people. Such as “black people steal things”. Or your friends might tell stories of a certain group of people. As we gain information of these stories we remember them, and learn to distrust that group. • Scientist found out the amygdala Response is part of your brain that responses to your fear. The amygdala triggers the flight or fight mode. It decides whether you fight or flee when you scare of something, or something is threating you. • The Boers feared the Native South Afrikaners, that why they wanted to avoid the blacks. As the flight mode was triggered, discrimination and prejudice was escalated to violence.

  10. What changed Apartheid? Sanctions Diplomatic A.N.C became militant. Neighboring Countries White Leaders Resigning • There were sanctions from within and outside the country. Imports and Exports were stopped. South Africa were banned from world sport. • People were not allowed into several countries. • The A.N.C started to form an army. Ready to fight back without giving mercy. This pressured the whites because, whites knew they could also loose their life. • Many countries(Zambalawe, Namibia) neighboring South Africa became independent. The surrounding countries had who’d use to follow the “White Rule” now had changed. • 60 most powerful white leaders went to talk with the ANC. Helping the blacks against Apartheid.
