The Internet and the role of the information professional • why do information professionals need Internet skills? • what skills and knowledge do they need? (core competencies) • how do they acquire the necessary skills and knowledge?
Why? reasons for becoming Internet literate • survival: ‘as necessary as a driver’s licence’ • fastest growing medium in history • to facilitate access to resources • to train/teach others • to publish & disseminate information
The Internet: core competencies 1. understanding the basic nature of the Net • the Web is not a digital library • not ‘just another medium’ - hypertext is non-linear • global publishing medium • search engines - how they operate
The Internet: core competencies 2. Search engines • knowledge of 3 - 4 engines; those of most use to students/staff/self • developing search skills & strategies 3. Evaluation • critical thinking skills: form versus content; determining originator • selecting and collating sites of interest
The Internet: core competencies 4. publishing on the Web • as part of Web team - utilising skills set • html • design • developing an Intranet

Not surfing but sailing: making the transition • individual level: - motivation + interest + time • organisational level: - provide right environment/encourage - provide initial training/awareness sessions
Internet skills: summary • information professionals need to be competent users of the Net NOW • understanding/knowledge/skills - essential to survival,credibility,image & overall effectiveness • evaluation is critical skill; filter information
