We will begin by looking at the CNC lathe. This machine has 2 axis, the Z axis which is on the main machine spindle,and the X - Axis X axis which is at right angles to it. Z -Axis If we think of a conventional centre lathe, if the tool is moving in the X axis, then we are either facing the work, plunge cutting or setting the depth of cut prior to turning a diameter. In the same way we may consider the Z axis of being that which we use when we are turning a diameter or taking a pass on a thread.
