Apartheid made South Africa an outcast among the world community, so some countries began to put economic sanctions on South Africa. • Political organizations in South Africa like the African National Congress (ANC) pushed for an end to apartheid. • In 1990 the leader of the ANC, Nelson Mandela, was released from jail where he had been since 1962.
