Reimbursable meals for Birth through 3 months Infant meal/snack requires ONLY breast milk or IFIF Claim (Regardless of who supplies the IFIF) The policy recognizes the non-food related cost of serving infants by allowing reimbursement for meals containing only breast milk or infant formula, whether supplied by the caregiver or by the parent.
Infant Meal Pattern4-7 months old • Breakfast: • IFIF or breast milk • Iron-fortified Infant Cereal (when developmentally ready) • Lunch/Supper: • IFIF or breast milk • Iron-fortified Infant Cereal (when developmentally ready) • Fruit and/or Vegetable (when developmentally ready) • Snack: • IFIF or breast milk
Reimbursable meals for 4-7 months Semi-solid foods are introduced when the infant is developmentally ready, which is a decision made by the parents and infant’s doctor Parent supplies ALL components Infant meal/snack requires ONLY breast milk or IFIF Claim (Regardless of who supplies the IFIF) Do Not Claim Infant meal requires breast milk/IFIF, IFIC* &/or fruit/vegetable* Center supplies ONE, TWO or ALL components Claim * When developmentally ready

Claiming Infant Meals Scenario 1: • 9 month old infant • The parent/guardian provides breastmilk or iron fortified infant formula (IFIF) and the center provides at least one other component at breakfast, lunch, or supper. • Is this a claimable meal? YES
Claiming Infant Meals Scenario 2: • 8 month old infant • The parent/guardian provides breastmilk/IFIF and all solid components. • Is this a claimable meal? NO
Claiming Infant Meals Scenario 3: • 6 month old infant eating solid foods • The mother breastfeeds the child at the center for breakfast and the child care center also feeds the infant solid food supplied by the center. • Is this a claimable meal? YES
Claiming Infant Meals Scenario 4: • 2 month old infant • Mother came to the center to breastfeed her infant. • Is this a claimable meal? NO
Claiming Infant Meals Scenario 5: • 11 month old infant • At breakfast, infant is not eating iron-fortified infant cereal per parents request • Infant receives center-purchased formula, fruit and another grain/bread item (pancakes, adult cereal, toast, etc.) • Is this meal claimable? NO
Creditable Foods for Infants • Foods prepared at the center, with appropriate modifications • Commercially-prepared foods must be plain fruits, vegetables, and meats (not combination of different components) • Infant cereal must be iron-fortified • Serve in a bowl with a spoon, not in a bottle
