Grading Student Writing for the benefit of the student. Michelle Bonanno ENG305A
What is my topic about? • Students feed off of a teacher’s evaluation. • Grading student writing requires more than a x/100 score. • It needs to explain students areas of improvement while promoting future writing.
My topic… • My MGP discusses the different grading methods I have found through my research. • Through my genres, I will show a student (Dwayne) going through each grading method, focusing on his initial reaction to the grading and how his writing can benefit from the grading method in the future.
“The Numbers Approach to Grading Papers” • Point system grading that makes it the students responsibility to revise in order to improve their grade. Getting a better grade is an incentive to revise and improve their writing in the long run. • With revision, the paper improves, the score goes up, and overrides the lower score.
Research continued… • Point system be out of 10,20, or 30 points depending on how much the teacher wishes to weigh the paper in the students grade. • Shows a bigger improvement in student’s writing. The quality of the paper improves with each revision, and the student’s future writing improves as they learn what qualities their paper should have for a higher grade.
My Genre Layout • Introduction – email to Dwayne’s future teacher (me) • Within the email’s “attachments” are the genres: • Example of Dwayne’s paper, e-graded • Dwayne’s writing journal in Romano’s class • Short story about Dwayne improving writing through Numbers Approach system • Email exchange between Dwayne and his teacher about a graded paper, with attached grading sheet • Comic of Dwayne using online rubric for a paper • Conclusion – A email response to the introduction, concluding what could be the best grading method for Dwayne.
Would I use MGP in high school? • It can be used in all grades, depending on how you implement it in the classroom • 9th grade: • Research a critic’s view on the relationship of Romeo and Juliet. Instead of writing a summary of his/her viewpoint and comparing it to the play, create a new scene, staying true to the play’s characters and setting, that highlights the article’s main points.
12th grade • Research your future profession, including: education required, college offering that degree, how much the job pays, what your typical duties are, your work environment, etc. • With your research, create a story of your future life, that highlights you in your future job. Include how you got there, what you do daily, and how your life is as a result of your job.
