The Bare Bones • Bone is made up of 2 components: living and non-living • Living: • Bone cells (upkeepers) • Non-living: • Collagen • Calcium/phosphate
So What is Osteoporosis? • In a nutshell, Osteoporosis is when you lose too much bone, make too little bone, or both • It is not a disease you can “catch,” rather a classification you fall under • The primary symptom is brittle bones that are easily broken • Talk to your doctor to have a disease risk screening
Prevention • Even though some periods of bone growth are more critical than others, it is never too late to prevent Osteoporosis • Prevention is possible by making changes to your: • Diet • Exercise • Lifestyle behavior
Diet Consumption of enough calcium and vitamin D is essential in order to build strong bones Calcium builds bones Sources include: low-fat dairy products (milk, yogurt, and cheese), green leafy vegetables among others Vitamin D is necessary in order for calcium to be absorbed Sources include: SUNLIGHT, fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna), and fortified foods like dairy and cereals, and more! Exercise Exercise doesn’t only make changes that we can see and feel It also strengthens our bones without our knowing Types of exercise to strengthen bone include: Weight-bearing exercises Muscle strengthening exercises
Lifestyle Behavior • Limit alcohol intake • 2-3 drinks/day • Limit caffeine intake • 3 cups/day • This also includes any soda • Smoking is also a risk factor for Osteoporosis and bone fracture
Summary • Bone is a living structure and a component of our health we often forget about • Bone loss is a normal part of the aging process, but too much bone loss is abnormal, and is called Osteoporosis • Though some stages are more critical for bone growth, you can combat bone loss at any point • Nutrient rich diet • Load-bearing/strength training exercise • Eliminate excess alcohol/caffeine intake and don’t smoke
