What Was the prohibition? • Prohibition ratified by the 18th amendment on January 16, 1920. • It prohibited manufacturing, importing, exporting, transporting, buying or selling of alcohol.
Why Was It Passed? • Passed in order to improve economy, and put an end to alcoholism, as well as: • decrease crime, poverty, and death rate • Improve quality of life and strengthen society after WW1 devastation.
Social Effects • Following the prohibition came an explosion of crime: • Homicide went from 5.6 (per 100,000 population) in the pre-prohibition period, to nearly 10 (per 100,000 population). • Assault, and battery, increased nearly 13 percent. • A new criminal activity: bootlegging was born
End of the Prohibition • Due to the grandiose augmentation of crime and alcohol consumption, the Prohibition was forced to come to an end. • In the year 1933 the 21st Amendment was passed • With the help of President F.D. Roosevelt, the Prohibition was no longer a federal law.
Social Effects 2 • The prohibition saw the dominance of organized crime. • Famous gangsters such as Al Capone profited from bootlegging. • Bootlegging- The illegal production of alcoholic beverages. • Chicago was the center of operations for most of these organized crime syndicates
On a Literary Note • In the book “The Great Gatsby”, Jay Gatsby and Nick Wolfsheim are both profitable bootleggers.
