Research Homework - Due Today 1 Go to the new schools network to check the views of parents who want to set up free schools: www.newschools network.org/get-involved/parents-views 2 Find out what the various teachers’ organisations say about free schools. Try the websites of the: NASUWT, ATL, NUT & ASCL. Also ask teachers in school – Do they think free schools will help raise standards and improve community cohesion?
  5. Main Task Independent / Pair /Group literacy task You are going to have to present your findings to the class so ensure you work well in a pair/team to find all the arguments for and against. Every pupil must answer all questions then make a clear diagram showing the key arguments for and against

Pair research / discuss then answer the following : Free Schools 1 Free Schools – what do we mean by free schools? 2 Where did the Conservatives get the idea of Free schools from eg which country or countries? 3 What does Michael Gove say Free schools will improve? 4 WillFree schools offer an equal education to all children? gg free from discrimination etc 5Why might it be a good thing for a school to be out of local authority control (think KCC) and centrally funded by government? 6 How do free schools compare to Charter schools in the USA? 7 What is the general opinion of free schools amongst the main teaching unions in the UK 8. Why do you think so many parents would like to set up a free school? 9Do you think education eg schools should be a public funded service (eg not for profit) or part of a private business (profit orientated) Explain.) 2 10 What are the Main Argumentsfor and against free schools? (P 8-12 booklets)

Homework – Due 19th Oct This is now your fourth piece of homework on Free Schools – if you are behind on any of them you must quickly catch up NB: You will need to bring at LEAST 4 pieces of Independent research in on the topic for the CASS on 9th Nov to pass as well as a sound understanding of arguments for and against. 1 Find out more about Swedish Free Schools and Charter Schools and specifically how they have tried to raise community cohesion and educational standards – can you find evidence for or against? List your sources please. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA!!! 2 Research the 3 main political parties views on Free Schools –NB: you already know what Michael Gove thinks does all his party agree with him?
