ENA - Biomethane Campaign Working Group NIA Projects - Update
Siloxane - Online Analyser • Scope: • To demonstrate the suitability (or otherwise) of this analytical technique for protecting the UK GDNs. • Why: • If Total Silicon limits are imposed by the HSE, GDNs will need to demonstrate compliance through the use of accurate analytical techniques/equipment. • The role of DNV GL: • DNV GL have scoped out a project to assess the performance of a siloxane analyser in the laboratory and during a field trial at Severn Trent Minworth Bio methane plant. Testing on bio methane derived from waste water treatment plant will provide a robust and stringent test of the equipment. • Progress to-date: • Sanction paperwork sent for fast track approval on 5th August 14. • Meeting held with Seven Trent Water o site to finalise proposal • PEA will be registered as soon as possible after sanction. • Purchase Order to be placed in mid September with first installation of FTIR analyser in October
UK Siloxane Impact Study – Domestic Appliances • Determine hierarchy of effects for UK domestic appliances ranging from “nuisance” to “risk for safe operation” during the lifetime of the appliance • Flame safety device, power reduction, window opacity (fires), CO emissions, etc. • Perform experiments at four different siloxane concentrations for each selected appliance and analyze results based on earlier experience and analysis extrapolate to possible specification levels • Choice of appliances proposed with ENA and British Trade Association • Possible ‘pre-examination’ to select sensitive appliances • The experimental design and analysis is aimed at a method of extrapolation that is consistent with and/or verified by experimental results • Final deliverable is hierarchy of effects in time at three potential specification levels: • – 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 mg Si/m3 (chosen with ENA) dose/effect results: time-to-effect at different concentrations • Note: discussion of the project content, budget options and planning is in “Outline Proposal and Budget Estimate for ENA Siloxane Impact Study; Domestic Appliances” (16 December 2013)
UK Siloxane Impact Study – Domestic Appliances • Total NIA cost £353,495 inclusive of cost to purchase appliances, two possibilities: • Costs include fuel consumption, siloxanes, analyses; exclude costs of appliances, travel costs and VAT. • Length of project: 18 months – 4 phases. • Phase 1 – 2 months – Development of test program • Phase 2 – 3 months – Pre examination • Phase 3 – 12 months – Experiments on selected appliances • Phase 4 – 3 months – Analysis of the impact of silica deposition on appliance performance • Sanction paperwork sent for review – to be tabled at 18th August IPG • Collaborative with SGN & NGN • Draft Contract sent to all parties . • PEA and cost split agreed by all parties. • Order to be placed in September
