  2. How do we know about Egypt’s early kings and governments? • They left behind written records. • Developed a system of writing called hieroglyphics. • Used more than 700 symbols. • Some stood for whole words or sounds while others represented letters.

  3. Scribes • Egyptian scribes were very educated • Took many years to learn all the symbols • Jobs included keeping records of taxes and laws

  4. What did they write on? • First they wrote on clay pottery • Then wrote on stone and a paper-like material called papyrus. • Our word paper comes from the word papyrus.
