Being on Stage Some people are naturally comfortable in front of audiences. If you don’t feel you have a natural ability to speak comfortably in front of audiences, here are a few ideas. There is no one set of rules; find ones that work for you. Here are some ideas
Being On Stage - Gestures • We do not plan our gestures in regular life, so we do not need to plan them for presentations. – our objectives and emotional commitment cause our gestures.
Being On Stage - Helpers Don’t be drift and shuffle on stage • Anchor (tangible, podium, etc) • Destination (define a place to go while speaking) • Props (hold something to be comfortable, remote control, a piece of art, paper, pen, - makes you feel pertinent but not distracting to the audience)
Being On Stage - flexibility • Change your destination and where you anchor yourself on stage in order to underscore a change in emphasis, subject, or mood. This will help avoid monotony.
Overcoming FEAR • Make the unknown known If possible, go to the speaking site beforehand (find out where exactly you will actually be speaking – podium, etc) • Who they are? Are they expert?
Brainstorm Who You Are • Things to think about before and after presentation
Exercise who you are (write single sentence that presents me) - I am _______ working on ___________ who is interested in ______- I am ________expertise on __________ * It can be project specific:I am a visual artist who is working on BlueApple project. * It can start from personality: I am a curious artist who makes photography about ____ * Additional visualization is great: My recent project was about photographing ____ from ___ that has stories of ___, which I was interested in because of_____

Topic material of the week : Paper I • Museum of Art and Design : MAD’s SLASH show: paper under the knife – possibility of works on paper
Fact of paper • The use of paper is a direct contributor to the harm of the environment via the destruction of one of our most wonderful natural resources -- trees. • Paper is the number one material that is thrown away. • For every 100 pounds of trash we throw away, 35 pounds is paper. • Paper fills up 30-40% of American landfill space. Source1 Source2 • As paper decomposes in landfills or is burned in incinerators, chemicals from its inks are released into the environment. Source • Deforestation is occurring at an alarming rate worldwide, particularly in tropical regions. The World Resources Institute estimated in 1997 that only a fifth of the world's old-growth forests were undamaged, and almost half of these faced immediate threats from logging and development. Source • Americans use more than 50 million tons of paper each year, consuming more than 850 million trees. Source
