5. Sahara Desert The hammada are rocky plains. Old volcanic rock An erg is a sea of dunes. The Sahara desert is the largest in the world after Antarctica. Very few people live here. The desert has several types of terrain. An oasis is a small source of water in the desert. Knowing the location of oases is vital for crossing the desert alive.

6. Arabian Deserts Sahara Desert The Nefud is a stony desert to the north The “Empty Quarter” is a desert of sand in the south. It contains some of the deepest sand in the world, sometimes 600 feet deep. The Najd is a plateau that offers some grazing.

7. Arabian Deserts Sahara Desert An important exception would be Riyadh, the largest city in Saudi Arabia. Most of the population lives along the coasts.

16. Israel is not a Muslim state. It is a Jewish state. However, not everyone that lives here is Jewish.

17. This is the Dome of the Rock. It is a mosque, a place of worship for Muslims. This makes some Jewish Israelis angry. It is in Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel. It sits on the site of the temple of the Jews, which was destroyed long ago.

18. This is a map of Israeli settlements in an area called “the West Bank”. Many Muslims feel that this should be their part of their land. They feel that the Jewish Israelis are moving in to take over. This makes some Muslims of the area angry.
