Plan of Work (Dr. Morrison) • Ask advisor for current Plan of Work on ID&T website • Complete in consultation with your advisor • Submit the plan of work before you complete 9 hours - it can be modified • Electives must be approved by your advisor • Transfer in up to 12 hours with approval of advisor and GPD • (If not used for another degree)
Registration Process (Sonya) • Go to MIDAS to activate your MIDAS ID and activate services • Search Leo Online for classes based on Plan of Work • Contact your advisor well in advance of each semester • Include your University Identification Number (UIN #) in all registration correspondence • Reference the specific class by CRN # and name (from Leo Online) • Things to consider: • Take required classes early in the program • Be aware (ask) which semester classes are offered, especially those outside IDT (and if you are a distance student) • Use your Plan of Work as a registration road map • Always use your odu.edu e-mail

Advisors: Support and Expectations (Brett and Michelle) • Initial advisor is assigned based on interest and match • Get to know the backgrounds and interest areas of faculty in the department • Discuss your interests with a potential mentor to see if there is a “match” • The backgrounds and interests may allow you to help participate in new and upcoming research
Classes: Workload and Expectations (Brett and Michelle) • I gave up television altogether to accommodate the 10-15 hours I spend outside of class for EACH class. • Tips for survival? Take statistics courses in a televised format and use the archives to play back the lectures • Learn to use Google Scholar and the library online • Connect with two or three other students ahead of you as guides • Know your assignment deadlines and plan accordingly. • It's OK to feel lost and confused the first semester. Most of us did. • The three R's: Read, relax, and repeat. • Know how you learn and learn how you know.

Getting Help (Brett and Michelle) Communication: • Keep an open channel between you and your advisor • Help them understand • Assist in finding your passion • Talk to your professors - They've probably heard it • Talk to other students - They've probably been there • Most Important • Keep family & friends involved and close • They're your best support group • Networking - get to know your physical & virtual classmates (Skype is good) • Bragging - How is this helpful? • Faculty (Dr.M) • Your Best Work If you don't know, ask. This is normal.
Research Residency (Jennifer) • Proposal development in Research Residency course • Conduct study with your advisor • Submit for publication or presentation before comps
The "Comps" Process (Jennifer) • Comprehensive exams taken before dissertation • Must complete research residency prior to starting exams • Consists of two parts: • Written exam with 3 sections taken over 4 weeks • Instructional Design & Human Performance • Issues in Instructional Design and Technology • Research Question and Proposal (2 weeks) • Oral exam after written exam is submitted • Preparation: • Submit list of 6 to 10 significant articles relevant to the research question • Work with your advisor before starting this one
Research Opportunities & Responsibilities (Jennifer) • Consider carefully the list of available classes and tie to an area of YOUR research interest • If you aren't interested it will be a struggle • Consider you enjoyment and passion • Focus each paper or assignment on an area of interest • Build on your prior work in future classes with an eye toward potential dissertation topics
