Democratic Reform in Britain • Reform Bill of 1832 • middle class men could now vote • Chartist Movement • Eventually Parliament will meet the workers’ demands and will permit working-class men to vote (1867) • After 1884, most adult males had the right to vote
Suffrage for Women • By 1890, no women to vote • As more men got their right to vote, women will fight for the same • Women voting = too radical • Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) • Successes were gradual
Irish Nationalism • 1801: Ireland formally joined to Britain • Mid-1800s: Push for independence • Home rule: local control over internal matters • 1916: Irish nationalists attack British officers • Irish Republican Army (IRA) formed-an unofficial military force seeking independence for Ireland • 1921: home rule granted to southern Ireland • Irish Free State • Northern Ireland remained a part of Great Britain • 1949: Irish Free State declared itself the independent Republic of Ireland
