Geography Terms • Relative Location: point or place in relation to another point or place. • Example: “Canada is North of the United States.” • “The Persian Gulf lies between Saudi Arabia and Iran.”
Absolute Location: the exact location of a place using a measurable numeric value—usually latitude and longitude • Example: The absolute location of Boise Idaho is 43º 37' N, 116º12' W
Latitude and Longitude • Latitude: angular distance of a point north or south of the equator—runs horizontally • Longitude: angular distance of a point east or west of the Prim Meridian—runs vertically
Characteristics • Physical Characteristics: natural elements such as mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans, deserts, etc. • Human Characteristics: man-made elements such as buildings, monuments, roads, etc.
