  3. Changing Attitudes • At turn of 20th century, empire begins to falter • Economy hitting recession • People losing faith in country and society

  4. Historical events • Period begins with death of Victoria • Ends with World War II • World War I occurs in the middle

  5. 3 characteristics • Nostalgia • Only present before WWI • People thought best times were past • Didn’t understand why things had changed • Wanted to get good times back

  6. 3 Characteristics • Fragmentation • Society becomes more divided • No one really interacts with anyone else • No unifying identity everyone can share

  7. 3 characteristics • Alienation • Effect of fragmentation on individuals • People feel detached from mainstream society • Feel that their culture doesn’t represent them anymore • Feel that they have no ability to affect the world around them

  9. Began with nationalism • Everyone believed this would prove their superiority • Would put their country back on top

  10. Became a disaster • Modern technology+trench warfare=no progress • Millions killed on both sides • Most people not sure what was accomplished

  11. aftermath • Society still fragmented, alienated • Nostalgia replaced with cynicism

  12. Modernist literature • More outsider authors being published and read • Present more critical view of England than Victorians

  13. Modernist literature • Writers emphasize the internal workings of the mind • Stream of consciousness becomes popular • Authors want to show how each person views reality differently • Show how prejudices can affect perceptions

  14. Modernist literature • Authors try to use literature to bridge alienation, fragmentation • Show world from multiple perspectives • Allow reader to see all at once • Make literature the thing that unifies people

Ideas we get from modernists • Class, gender, and occupation differences can alter people’s perspectives. • Not everyone within a nation has the same sense of that nation’s values/identity. • Literature can help us see the world from other people’s perspectives. • A writer’s job is to explore the ideas/values of every part of society.
