What is SCADA? • SCADA stands for: • Supervisory • Control • And • Data • Acquisition
What is Modbus? • Modbus is a serial communications protocol • One application is to connect a remote terminal unit (RTU) and server unit in SCADA
Problem • Many pieces of equipment could be located in places where hazardous conditions exist • There needs to be a way to monitor these pieces of equipment
Problem • Oil refineries • Water treatment plants • Wastewater treatment plants
Solution • SCADA server is located in a protected central monitoring location • From here, the equipment can be monitored safely

Results • Installed at the beginning of the semester • Failed halfway through • Contacted company to diagnose / repair / replace
Results • Sent unit off to be fixed • One and a half weeks later, unit arrives back • Nothing supposedly wrong with the unit, but trouble ticket says the NVRAM was cleared
Results • Three days after unit is back and has been operating normally, unit malfunctions again • Contacted company, asked for troubleshooting steps / advice; didn’t work • What’s next?
Conclusion • SCADA / Modbus is useful for the remote and distributed control of plant functions • This particular unit probably needs to be tested more thoroughly before deployment in a real-world setting
