The History • The Massachusetts Colony was one of the original 13 colonies. • The original 13 colonies were divided into three geographic areas. • The Massachusetts Colony was founded in 1630 by John Winthrop and other Puritans. • The Massachusetts colony existed unit 1776 when it joined in fight for independence against Great Britain.
Government • This government was a Charter then later became a Royal government. • The original government was run by the Governor and the Deputy Governor. • Governor's where annually elected by the company. • King William lll, and Queen Mary ll co rulers of the Kingdom of England gave the Massachusetts Bay Colony its Charter government.

Demographics • A large majority of the population was Puritan • Many Native Americans occupied the colony • Rapid population growth
Culture • The Puritans believed in living simply and peacefully. • Boston shares many roots with greater New England. • The Colony was a man’s world. • Women did not participate in town meetings and were excluded from decision making in the church. • Women were viewed as instruments of Satan. Children were regarded as the property of their parents.
Religion • Most people practiced Puritanism • The Puritans wanted to change the English church by uniting them with the other christian churches. • Most of the Massachusetts people would not know of puritanism if the puritans never moved from england the america with the intent of religious freedom
Native Americans • In exchange for furs, the colonists gave the Native Americans metal implements, such as axe-heads and knives. • In 1636, the Pequot War began between the New England settlers and the Narragansett and Mohegan Indians living in Connecticut and Massachusetts. • By the time of early European colonization attempts, there were over 30,000 Native Americans in Massachusetts Algonquin language group. • The most well known tribes were the Wampanoag, Pequot, Nipmuck, and the Massachusett.
