career Francois Boucher was a French painter who worked in the Rococo style. He also, along with painting, designed theater costumes and sets. Boucher chose to portray scenes with a definitive style of eroticism as his mythological scenes are passionate and intimately amorous rather than traditionally epic. Boucher, according to art critic Dennis Diderot, prostituted his own wife. Boucher later went on to teach Jacques-Louis David. He is well know for his idealism and provocative paintings regarding classical themes. Hayden Murphy, Connor Cohen, Chase Markart
Info • The image on top left is titled Portrait of Madame De Pompadour. The drapery of her elegant gown shows his appreciation of classical antiquity. The floral design shows his attention to the value and detail of painting. The shading in the background of the figure shows his skill in depicting chiaroscuro from renaissance artists. • The image on the bottom left is titled portrait of the artist's wife. His painting is colored brightly and the color almost looks like it drowns out the colors from her. Bouchers wife is depicted in this painting, she is a subject of some controversy as he prostituted her out to the town. • The far right painting by Boucher is called Cupid a Captive. Cupid is surrounded by women and some other Puti. This shows a reference to classical figures and also to old mythological Greek legends.
