  2. The Black Plague • Chaucer was born in the time of the plague • He most likely witnessed many of the people he knew dying in front of him which, especially at a young age, can have a lasting mental affect

  3. Battle of Poitiers • Battle between Wales and France in 1356 • Welsh victory, king John II taken to England

  4. The Great Schism 1378 • Two popes elected, one in France and one in Rome • Both ruled at the same time and caused extreme confusion in the church Pope VS Anti-Pope

  5. Peasant Revolution 1381 • Poll tax caused peasants to revolt • Revolt went to London and the Archbishop of Canterbury was beheaded

  6. Hundred Years War • Takes place during the entire life of Chaucer • Began around birth and ended after his death • War was between England and France • Caused big changes in government
