  2. Home • Input Devices For Numeric • Input Devices For Graphics • Input Devices For Audio • Input Devices For Video • Data Capture Devices End Show

  3. Input Devices for Numeric • Numeric Keypad • Barcode Readers • Magnetic Strip • Smart Cards • OMR • MICR

  4. Numeric Keypad • The small, palm size keypad usually on the right hand side of a keyboard, it consists of digits 0-9 and mathematical symbols • It uses a grid of wires, that disconnect, reconnect to send a binary signal to the computer • This is the deciphered by the computer and the digit is seen on screen

  5. Barcode Readers • A barcode reader consists of a light source, lens and light sensor which translates optical impulses into electrical ones • It analyses the barcodes image and sends the content to the scanner’s output source

  6. Magnetic Strip • Black strip on a card, i.e credit card • Capable of storing data • It works by modifying the magnetism of tiny iron based magnetic, particles on a band or magnetic material. • This is then read by a device plugged into a computer

  7. Smart Cards • A integrated circuit card, pocket sized card with embedded integrated circuits which can process data • Stores data in digital form, this is then read by a reader plugged into a computer.

  8. OMR • Optical Mark Recognition • Is the process of capturing human-marked data from document forms such as surveys and tests

  9. MICR • Magnetic Ink Character recognition • Is character recognition technology adopted mainly by the banking industry to facilitate the processing of cheques. • Magnetic Printer, magnetizing characters so that they can be read be digital readers.

  10. Input Devices for Graphics • Scanner • Digital Camera • Graphics Tablet • Video Frame Grabber • Electronic Whiteboard • FAX

  11. Scanner • Input device that translates human-readable or microform images to bitmapped machine-readable data • Optically scans images, printed text, hand writing, or an object and converts it to a digital images

  12. Digital Camera • A camera that stores still or moving pictures in a digital form • A camera tat encodes an image digitally and store it for later reproduction

  13. Graphics Tablet • Computer input device that allows on to hand-draw images and graphics, similar to the way one draws images with a pencil and paper. These tablets may also be used to capture data or handwritten signatures.

  14. Video Frame Grabber • An electronic device that captures individual, digital still frames from an analog video signal or a digital video stream.

  15. Electronic Whiteboard • Interactive technology for white boards • There are three types: • Resistive Membrane • Electro-magnetic • Laser Scanners • Takes the input translates it to a digital form through the computer and its software

  16. FAX • Used to transfer copies of documents of phone wires • Consists of image scanner, modem and printer

  17. Input Devices for Audio • Microphone • Direct from amplifier or sound system • Need for sound card

  18. Microphone • An acoustic to electron transducer or sensor that converts sound into an electrical signal • Takes sound converts it to ones and twos so the computer can use it
