  4. Russian Economy Over the years After the fall of the Soviet union Russia switched from being a centrally planed economy to a more market based and globally integrated economy. In 2009 Russia became the worlds largest exporter of both oil and natural gas. Russia took a hard economic fall in the beginning of 2009 when oil prices plummeted. Ever since the economy has been on slow climb upward.
