Family Relationships • Marriage • because becoming a parent is a life-changing event, it leads to a lot of stress which could affect the marriage of the partners. • Child Bond • like the mother, the father becomes filled with emotion during the birth of the child • bonding with the newborn is very rewarding for the father • Parenthood • big life event, causes a lot of stress • “while men and women become parents at the same time, they don’t become parents in the same way” (pg. 182)
Couvade • Changes in health • Meaning a sympathetic pregnancy in which a man experiences a variety of symptoms associated with pregnancy or childbirth while his partner is pregnant
Support System • Health- While being pregnant a woman has to care for herself and the baby. The father has to be there to help them stay healthy and make sure he helps take care of any health concerns. • Emotional support- A woman is very emotional during this time period. Her hormones are changing and she has a lot on her mind.
Support System • Labor coach- The father goes to birthing classes with the mother to be and is there helping her through actual labor. • Doctor appointment- Going with the mother to the doctors is very important. Usually when the father sees an image or hears a heart beat the pregnancy becomes real for the dad
