  1. Romans: 8. The Father of us All Romans 4: 1-25 p. 1040

  2. The Core of God’s Salvation Plan • The Son would be a “Propitiation” • To absorb the righteous wrath of God. • So God could remain true to his word – He will not acquit the guilty (Ex 23:7; Isa 5:23) • How do we take hold of this salvation? • By FAITH !!! • This is how it has always been ! (e.g. Abraham)

  3. 1. “Faith-that-makes-righteous” • Simple Greek Phrase – “faith of Jesus” • “Faith inJesus” [by us/people] • “Faith of Jesus” [in God] • “Faithfulness of Jesus” [to God] • Primarily interested in 3:26 • TNIV: “... those who have faith in Jesus” • But 4:16: “... those who have the faith of Abraham” • Same Greek Phrase! Therefore: “have faith of Jesus”

  4. 1. “Faith-that-makes-righteous” . . . • Our faith must have the same quality – is like – the faith of Abraham and Jesus (in his humanity). • Qualitative, not quantitative! • Type of faith, not amount (not about having Doubts) • Wholehearted commitment to God

  5. 2. Law of Faith • Rom 3:27 – “Law of works” vs “Law of faith” • Paul turns to the only one who can trump Moses - Abraham • Two key aspects: • The word “credited” (logizomai - account, reckon, credit) • The chronological sequence of the story

  6. 2. Law of Faith . . . • CREDITED (An accounting word): • Abraham gets an accounting credit of righteousness • AND God does not enter an accounting debit for his sin • The Debit is put to Jesus’ account and paid on the cross • Account of all who have faith shows only a credit of righteousness !!!! • TIMING: • Credit of righteousness was before he was circumcised • Abraham’s life establishes the “Law of faith”

  7. 3. The Faith of Abraham • “those who have the faith of Abraham” (v 16) • Abraham “gave glory to God” (v 20) • Rom 1:18, 21 “God’s wrath revealed ... not glorify him” • Abraham believed God’s ability to deliver on his promise • His body was “dead”, Sarah’s womb was “dead” (v 19) • He believed in the “God who gives life to the dead” (v 17) • God had the power to do what he had promised (v 21)

  8. Glorify God – Faith Not Glorify God – No Faith God Reject God Presence Worship Human Human Human Worship Human Love Exploit Worship Exploit Care Blessing Stewardship Creation: Things & Animals Creation: Things & Animals Credited as “righteousness” Incurs WRATH

  9. 3. The Faith of Abraham . . . Abraham gave God his rightful place in the order of the universe ! God credited this to him as righteousness.

  10. Being People of this Same faith • Gen 17:1 “walk before me faithfully and be blameless” • His faith was at work every day – it’s that kind of faith. • God covered him in Christ when he slipped up. Giving God his rightful place in our lives is a daily way of life !!
