Parent Orientation Shannon Stevenson PPCD Teacher Morton Ranch Elementary Thursday September 5th 2013
PPCD (Pre-school Program for Children with Disabilities) • Every child in here has a label through special education that qualifies them for this service • PPCD is a literal melting pot of different labels NCEC non-categorical early childhood with a suspicion of….. AU (autism)/PDD (pervasive developmental delay SI (speech Impairment) ID (intellectual disability) ED (emotional disturbance) OHI (other health impairment) LD (Learning disability) VI (visual impairment)
Moral of the Story… “Remember where you have been and where you are going. Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way.” ~Nikita Koloff
My Philosophy • A good preschool curriculum focuses on all areas of development (sensory, social/play, communication, academic, and gross/fine motor skills) • All children need ACCESS to their curriculum • All children need to EXPLORE their curriculum in a hands on way • All children need a way to COMMUNICATE with others • All children need to play and SOCIALIZE with others • I believe in setting limits and being CONSISTENT • All children respond to structure, schedules, repetition, and ROUTINE • I believe the before a child can learn anything else, they need to learn HOW TO LEARN (to sit, attend, participate) • I believe PARENTS are a critical part of the learning experience. Skills at school need to be reinforced at home.
Shannon Stevenson a.k.a. Ms. Shannon • I’ve known I wanted to work with kids since I was 15 • I went to Trinity University for undergrad and got a major in humanities with a minor in drama. I stayed there another year to get a M.A.T. Routine/repetition • Circle consists of same things every week: theme, weather, calendar, letter, story, color, shape, number, Matt & Molly • Schedule follows same routine as much as possible • Visual cues/schedules used EVERYWHERE • Even order for lining up and bathroom • Don’t they get bored???
Rotations specifics • Fine Motor/Art(DAILY): Ms. Jo will work on tracing, coloring, stacking/put in/connect, art projects weekly • Reading/Math (DAILY): Ms. Mary will work on letter sounds, letter ID, Number ID, counting, shapes, colors • Independent Station(2-3X a week): Ms. Shannon will work on assessments, work jobs, and individual goals pertaining to the IEP
Documentation • Weekly reports are a two ply copy. I keep the yellow copy you get the originals on Friday unless a short week…then Mondays • Your child’s goals are attached with A, B, C, D • This form is in the process of being updated amongst a committee of PPCD teachers/supervisors. However, it was not approved to go on line so it will still be a paper copy • This system of prompts/ plus or minus is how I collect data for the 9 weeks
IEP progress report/attendance • Every 9 weeks you will receive an IEP progress report. It will go home the same day report cards do in elementary…see attached schedule. Every area that pertains to that goal will be notated with a mastery level (ie 13/15 trials, less than 2, 85%) and a date. • You will also receive at attendance report that has to be signed and returned.
Behavior Management • Accommodations: Using things that help them access the curriculum to be successful: visual schedules/cues, headphones, different chairs, reinforcers, deep pressure, sensory brushes, vary lighting, FIRST/THEN • Keeping it Positive! Positive! Positive! With LOTS of CHOICE and CONSISTENCY!!! • Refocus/peace area: Get their mind on something else (drink of water, walk around, different activity). Use conscious discipline strategies. • Think Time: sitting out for length of age (3 yr old=3 min) • See copy of toolkit for consistent response to negative behavior
Websites for behavior management • Self Control/cool down: http://consciousdiscipline.com • Think time at home: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj0u8aZ-5O8 • Obviously you can change these things to modify your needs at home but it is a good starting point.

Also nice if healthy • Parent teacher conferences will be held in October. • Annual ARDs if your child is going to Kinder next year I will do two sets of goals.
