  6. How do we grade? • Homework 15% • Participation 15% • Assessments & Quizzes 70% • Assessments weighted twice • Quizzes weighted once

  7. Homework • The purpose of homework is help your child practice the skills they have learned that day at home. • Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday and occasionally on weekends if an assessment falls on a Monday. • They should bring home a note page that thoroughly explains the process for completing the skill they are practicing. • Homework score is calculated based on the following: • If turned in on time and with good effort, the assignment is worth 1 point. • If turned in late or turned in with little effort, the assignment is worth ½ point. • If not turned in at all, the assignment is worth 0 points.

  8. Assessments/Quizzes • Assessments are given at the end of each chapter and are weighted twice. • Quizzes are also known as “Check My Progress” and are given throughout a chapter. Quizzes are only weighted one time. • The purpose of assessing is to determine student strengths and areas for growth. From there, we can develop activities or lessons to challenge or support your child.

  9. Participation • 15% of the overall math score. • This score is based upon students working independently and collaboratively with their peers and coming to class prepared with the proper materials.

  13. ELA • Reading: Students will use a combination of materials including trade books, text, and other resources to meet the goals set by Common Core/ELA standards. • There will be guided reading, independent reading and content reading.

  14. WRITING Focus on qualities of good writing which include: • Mechanics and grammar • Essays • Fiction • Research • Book reports • response to reading • memoirs • Test taking strategies

  15. SPELLING • Phonics words • Lifelong words • Content words • Nightly practice • Classroom practice

  16. HOMEWORK Reading: • Your child will be required to read for 30 minutes 5 nights a week. You child will be required to complete a book project each month that reflects what they are reading. • Your child will be given a HOMEWORK grade for reading.

  17. HOMEWORK Continued… Spelling: • There will be three spelling assignments and one night of studying each week that will be done in their spelling notebook. These assignments will be due each Friday. Homework is worth 20 points. (approx. 10-15 minutes) • Weekly spelling practice will also take place in school. This practice includes working with words, word meaning, and edit for spelling.
