  1. Abortion

  2. Weeks of Pregnancy v. Weeks of Development • Doctors start counting pregnancy from the day of the last period, so if conception takes place 2 weeks after the last period the, then months of pregnancy will include 2 extra week. • For instance, a pregnant women who is 2 months pregnant on October 1, means that her last period was on August 1 but her conception date might have been August 15th. • This is important because 5 weeks of pregnancy can mean 3 weeks of fetal development.

  3. Fetal Development- Zygote • Day 1: Fertilization – An ovum, or egg (23 chromosomes), is penetrated by sperm (23 chromosomes) and one cell is formed that contains 46 chromosomes. • Day 2-3: The fertilized ovum passes through the fallopian tube as cell division increases. • Day 7-10: The blastocyst reaches the uterus; it has now become a “ball of cells”

  4. Embryo

  5. Fetal Development - Embryo • Week 2: The developing Embryo becomes embedded in the uterine wall. • Weeks 2-8: Organ systems such as the brain, spinal cord, heart, and digestive tube and certain structural features such as arm and leg buds begin and then continue to develop. • Week 12-16: “Quickening” occurs, and the mother can feel the fetus’s movements; the fetus is approximately 5.5 inches long.

  6. 2 Weeks

  7. 4 Weeks

  8. 16 Weeks

  9. Fetal Development • Weeks 20-28: The process of “viability” takes place, and the fetus is able to live apart from its mother, depending on the size (2+ pounds) and lung development • Week 40: Birth
