Purpose: The countersink is used to mill a hole for flat head machine screws so they can lie flush with the finished surface. They are also used on drilled holes to remove the sharp edges. Safety: The operator should not wear gloves or jewelry. COUNTERSINKS Cabinet 3 • Instructions: • Select the proper drill for your screw size. Drill the hole to the appropriate depth. (Figure1) • Select countersink ~1/4” larger than the diameter of the screw head. • If countersink appears to have a jagged edge, or does not cut properly, show tool to a mentor. • Insert countersink in chuck on drill press. (Figure 2) • Set cutting speed to half of drilling speed from the “Cutting Speed Chart” by the office. • Countersink hole deep enough so that the screw head is flush with the surface of the component.
