The Toulmin Model of Argument Composition II McCain 2010
General Overview Stephen Toulmin ( 1922-2009 ) was a British logician, who developed a model of argument based upon six elements. Toulmin’s Model follows a flowchart of logic, where people can determine the validity of a claim, based upon supporting information.
The Six Elements Depending upon where you look, (Google or Bing “it” and find out), you will find different names for the elements of Toulmin’s Model. You will also find a great many different styles of flow charts and explanations. Here is another one
The Vocabulary • Claim – The assertion of the speaker/writer • Data - What is used to back-up the claim • Warrant – Since this…then that • Backing – On account of • Qualifier – All, possibly, probably, most, many, some, few • The Rebuttal (“Oh really? What about?”)
Simple Toulmin Data: What backs up your claim…is it valid and authoritative? Claim: What IS your assertion? Warrant: The link or connection between the Data and the Claim Backing: This is this because of this (since) Qualifier: Probably, possibly, many, few, some, generally Rebuttal: However…the “yes, but”
