Introduction to Ergonomics What is it?
What is Ergonomics • The study of how the physical health of workers is affected by their workplace. • Studies have shown that certain things in the workplace (temperature, lighting, air, furniture) can affect employees work speed and health. • If work environments are designed ergonomically correct, employees are happier, more efficient, and take less time off.
Types of office equipment that can be made ergonomically correct: • Chairs • Desks • Computer screens • Keyboards
What are benefits to employers of making a workplace ergonomically correct? • Employees will perform more efficiently • Saves you money • No injuries • Workers are not taking time off • Less turnover(people quitting)
What are some of the actions that you should minimize? • Sitting in awkward or twisted postures • Reaching frequently • Maintaining the same posture for too long • Using too much muscular effort even for relatively easy tasks
Injuries from ergonomically incorrect workplace: • Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSIs) • Musculoskeletal Injuries(MSI) • The most frequently reported is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome(CTS). This occurs when a nerve in the wrist is used over and over with the wrong equipment. The wrist is unable to move properly. It is usually caused by long hours of keying at a computer that is not properly adjusted to the worker’s height. • Backache • Headaches • Poor circulation • Eye strain • Allergies
Activity • Make a group of 3 to 4 people. • You will be assigned a picture. Ask the teacher for your picture number. • You are to write down all the ergonomics problems you see in the photo and how you would fix them. • You will present your findings to the class.
