  3. Writer’s Notebooks: Practicing and Experimenting with Ideas • Quickwrites • Responses to literature • Writing revisions • Mechanics and style • Grammar in context

  4. Teaching Grammar in Context • Examples from “real” literature by “real” writers • Procedural knowledge • Seeing and then doing • Model texts are mechanically sound, showing students what is correct • Interactive activities to practice with words with others and out of our seats

  5. Quickwrite: Two Word Sentence Challenge Can you write a sentence that is just TWO words? If you can, see how many you can write! Underline the subjects, circle the verbs.

  6. Expanded Sentences subject predicate You will EXPAND a simple 2 word sentence into one that is more complex! Like this… • Raindrops fell. • Tiny raindrops that glistened fell. • Tiny raindrops that glistened in the darkness fell rapidly to the ground. • Millions of tiny raindrops that glistened in the darkness fell rapidly to the ground, making large, muddy puddles.

  7. Writer’s Notebooks PARENT Quickwrite! • Please take a few minutes to respond to your student in their writer’s notebooks. What did you see that impressed or interested you? What are your goals for them as writers this year?

  8. Class Blog www.msbosworth.wordpress.com • Updated daily with class agenda, homework and reminders • Class documents uploaded • Can be accessed directly or via Edline Get in the habit of checking the blog (especially when your child is absent)

  9. Reading Logs • Goal is 400 MINUTES per month • Reflects evidence of daily reading • Parent signature for each book read • Reading material may include fiction, non-fiction, the newspaper, graphic novels, magazines with articles (not just pictures and captions…)

Curriculum: Language Arts • Core novels include The Cay, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Tuck Everlasting, and Bridge to Terabethia. • Writing is standards-based, and includes narrative, expository, persuasive, analytical, and research-based styles. • Oral presentations, group work, and class discussion will be emphasized.

  11. Curriculum: Social Studies • Holt grade 6 Social Studies textbook. • Content and text is standards-based, and focuses on ancient civilizations and cultures. • Note-taking, study skills, and understanding “big ideas” will be emphasized. • Online textbook available at my.hrw.com

Procedures Highlights • In-Class Work: Students will complete their in-class work in a neat and timely manner, either individually or in groups, as assigned, for full credit. • Homework: Homework will be turned in on time and will be neat and totally completed to receive full credit. Each student will complete their work individually, as copying and cheating is not tolerated in my class or at MBMS.

  13. Procedures Highlights • Late Work: In-class work and homework turned in late will receive half credit. Writing assignments and long-term projects will be marked down 10% for every day it is late beyond the due date. Please see me if other arrangements need to be made. • Absences: When you are absent, please check the blog for class information and homework. Students have one day to make up work for every day they are absent, unless arrangements have been made. Make-up work will receive full credit when turned in on time.

  14. Procedures Highlights • Grades: All grades will be determined by points earned from class work, homework, writing assignments, projects, tests, and class participation. Grades are broken down as follows: 100-90% = A, 89-80% = B, 79-70% = C, 69-60% = D, anything below 59% = F. • I will do my best to post grades to Edline bimonthly.

Class Goals • Students will participate in whole class discussion that is student-driven, sharing their own ideas and providing examples to support those ideas. • Students will write literary analysis supported with examples from text. • Students will use academic language. • Students will cooperate and negotiate with each other to create an open environment where all are comfortable sharing ideas. • Students will enjoy their first year in middle school!

  23. Outdoor Science School • March 22-26 • Pali Mountain Institute near Lake Arrowhead, elevation 5,000 ft • Five days and four nights • Cost includes: • Transportation-Coach buses • 3 meals a day • Lodging (heated cabins with bunk beds and bathroom) • Teacher stipends

  24. Science School Staff • Science school instructors (all college graduates with bachelor of science degrees) • Two Registered Nurses - 24 hours per day • Instructor to student ratio is 1:10 • Instructors sleep in the cabin w/students • 10-12 MBMS teachers

  27. Registration • All information handed out / collected through the science teacher • Packet includes • registration form (pink) • parents’ packet (white) • district field trip permission form (blue) • Behavior contract (green) • Not included, Prescription Medication form (yellow)

  28. Cost • Payments received prior to January 29th: $460 • Payments received after January 29th: $500 • Payment Plans • Payment plans can be arranged • Please contact Kim Linz, Vice Principal • Deadline is January 29th, but contact Ms. Linz as early as possible
